Watch the September Women's Breakfast on Media
In a time when “disruption” of industries is the norm, how does one of the oldest industries — publishing — survive? What does it mean to be a writer when your bottom line is determined by number of clicks and time spent on websites? How do you make a living when staff jobs are becoming few and far between?  LMHQ’s first Women’s Breakfast of the season featured a discussion with industry veterans about how their work has evolved to accommodate advancements in advertising, technology and the ever-shifting digital media landscape.
The lively and honest conversation focused on the varying pathways our panelists took to get to where they are in their media career and the lessons learned along the way. Highlights included:
  • On how to establish yourself in the industry: "You have to chart your own way and be willing to step off the cliff."
  • On the best career decision made to date:  "Willing[ness] to move from a prestige publication to a less well-known organization."
  • On finding the time to write: "If you want to do it, there is a way, but there is no one right way."
  • On balacing social media participation: "Delegate" and "detox"; "know when to not say anything."
  • On how to fit creative projects into your work: "Don't beat yourself up if you can't do it all"; "Don't just write when inspired"
  • Carla Bruce-Eddings, Senior Publicist, Catapult/Counterpoint/Soft Skull Press
  • Serena Dai, Editor, Eater NY
  • Amelia Harnish, Senior Features Editor, Refinery29
  • Talya Minsberg, Assistant Editor of Strategy, Sports Desk, The New York Times
  • Elizabeth Spiers, Founder, The Insurrection (Moderator)
