Watch Fierce Female Founders
When it comes to gender diversity, there’s progress in the startup world. According to the 2019 PitchBook-All Raise All In: Women in the VC Ecosystem report, investment in female-founded startups is on the rise: In 2018, $46.3 billion went to startups founded by women. At the same time, gender bias is still a very real problem. At LMHQ’s January Women’s Breakfast, we spoke with some of the fearless female founders about the particular challenges they face, as well as tips for success in the crowded startup landscape.

Key takeaways included:
  • There can be an inherent strength and power in being a woman in business
  • The work environment is better at women-founded and women-oriented companies because they are comprised of people who want to work for those types of companies
  • Women can often be more open about what they don't know and are able to be more vulnerable/transparent
  • When seeking funding, it is crucial to tap your personal network
  • The model for leadership is changing: becoming more diverse and breaking the mold of traditonally masculine role
  • Lead with a "velvet hammmer": if you are "too nice" you end up huring the organization and yourself
  • Set the core values of your company early on and ensure that your employees share them
  • Try to build a personal Board of Advisors to help you navigate through your career path
  • When struggling with being "enough", try to understand if the voice is internal or external and only listen to the internal voice
  • Recommended books: Becoming by Michelle Obama, Range by David Epstein, Getting Naked and Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, It's Not Always Depression by Hilary Jacobs Hendel, Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss
