Watch Creating a Racially Equitable Organization
As society reckons with the hard conversations about racial equity and justice that have been brought to the forefront by the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others and the Black Lives Matter movement, companies are grappling with how best to incorporate calls for action and lessons learned into their operations. From revised mission statements to rebranding to dedicated DEI hires, many of their solutions have taken a high-level, top-down approach and can seem like a “quick fix”. In this action-oriented environment, it can be easy to forget that there are already many organizations that have effectively integrated racial justice into their missions and operations.
In this panel discussion, we heard from the leaders of some of these organizations about the practices they use to promote diversity and racial equity both within their organizations and in their practices/initiatives. They showcased how institutions can adopt tangible bottom-up practices to allow for a sustainable, inherent commitment to racial justice.

Key takeaways included:

  • Don't just hire for DEI; make sure that build a company culture that actively supports these employees.
  • Keep conversation honest and ongoing. Make sure to explicitly focus on issues of racial justice and equality.
  • Provide resources for your employees to think critically about their own attitudes and potential biases.
  • Continually hold up a mirror to your organization and hold yourself accountable.
