ABNY YP Policy Brief: Ranked Choice Voting

Date: 10/16/2019

Time: 6:00pm
Where: LMHQ, 150 Broadway, New York NY

The Association for a Better New York, in partnership with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, invites you to join us on Wednesday, October 16 for a Policy Brief on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). The event will feature Carlo Prato, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, who will overview RCV, followed by Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause New York, who will provide New York City context for the RCV proposal on November's ballot.
RCV, sometimes called instant runoff voting, is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates by preference on their ballots. On Election Day Tuesday, November 5, Ballot Question #1 will ask voters to approve the process of ranking up to five candidates in primary and special elections for the positions of Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President, and City Council, beginning in January 2021.
Dr. Prato will provide an overview of the benefits of RCV, discuss the issues and obstacles that come along with it, evaluate the implications for New York City, and explore any anticipated issues with voter confusion or questions.
Ms. Lerner will help demonstrate RCV with a mock ballot and election using the system.  She will also discuss and analyze prior research on RCV in New York City.
